She only wanted a NAP... and woke up 6 MONTHS LATER!

Sie wollte nur Mittagsschlaf machen und wachte erst 6 Monate später wieder auf

Beth Goodier is a modern Sleeping Beauty. The 22-year old suffers from a rare disease called Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), which causes her body to demand unusual amounts of sleep. It is common for the condition to surface in adolescence, and Beth's own condition began at the age of sixteen. Beth will go to sleep for up to 22 hours a day, and her longest sleep phase lasted for six months. Waking up can be difficult,  as so many hours asleep makes her unable to distinguish the dream world from reality.

Beth slept for six months, through Christmas and her birthday.

KLS is very rare, with only about 1000 individuals affected by the disorder worldwide. It's also known as "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome," but that name is much too romantic for a disease that is, in reality, anything but.  Beth's symptoms strike at least once a month, and her mother has estimated that the 22-year old has slept for 75% of her lifetime. This has been a great burden, since Beth has been unable to engage in normal studies, a social life, or professional development.

Beth Goodier cannot pursue normal studies due to her condition.

Sufferers of Klein-Levin's Syndrome suffer from other symptoms as well. During the brief awake phases, they are largely apathetic, very sensitive to light and sound, and are uncommunicative and disoriented. Often when they wake, they struggle to distinguish between dreams and reality.

Young men are the most affected by the condition, and treatment options have not been widely explored due to the rarity of the condition. However, the chances of recovery are generally good, with symptoms resolving in adulthood.
