Buying a knife is an important investment like any other, so don't be shy about testing it out. Take it out of the box, heft it, mime cutting (safely of course) and if possible, ask the salesperson for something to actually chop. Ask about the return policy, and see if it is possible to take it back, so that you can really test it out at home before fully committing, and above all, never buy a knife that you haven't held.
