Hello Peter Sherwood, so tell us...

When did you begin your blog, and what inspired you to start it?

I started writing my blog EveningsWithPeter.com in 2009 when my husband and I found ourselves in the pantry surrounded by a library of cookbooks and loosely assembled recipes spilling out of binders. We looked at each other and said, “We have got to start using some of these.” Several appetizing tomes went into storage. Others were opened immediately, such as The French Chef Cookbook by Julia Child, to page 97, which features Cassoulet from The Thirty-ninth Show—an affair that took close to a week in preparation (we made our own sausages). So, then I began to write it all down.

Are you involved in the blogging community - how do you attract new readers?

Twitter!

What are your culinary influences?

Julia Child, Molly O'Neill, Michael Lomonaco, M.F.K. Fisher, rare and old cookbooks.

How did you make the transition from stage to kitchen?

I always wanted to be a writer and loved trying my hand in the kitchen. As a theatrical agent, I represented other people's work. Whether it's my books or my creations in the kitchen, my work is my own. Writing my food blog combines both these aspirations/inspirations.

What is your earliest food memory?

Inspired by an episode of 70's Saturday morning cartoon, The Oddball Couple, where the fancy one created a gourmet dish, I set out to make something of my own. Celery sauteed in soy sauce on toast was the bill of fare--it was dreadful.

Do you have a secret ingredient, a product you use a lot that is unexpected or that helps you save time?

Bouillon cubes such as porcini and lamb found in Europe and specialty shops stateside save so much time when it comes to making stock. Prepared Court Bouillon cubes, for example, is much cheaper than wrangling all the herbs and then having to make your stock.

Is there any dish, ingredient or type of food you refuse to cook? Or anything that you refuse to eat?

Not wild about slimy reptiles.

What are your goals for your blog? Where would you like to see it in the next year? Five years?

I would like everyone to eat with Pete! My goal has always been to demonstrate the thought behind pairing people with well-considered food courses, drink
and music to create a complete, wonderfully memorable evening at home. There is indeed a divine method to it which I hope I convey!

My worst food flop was...

Serving sole meuniere to a finicky French chef. The fish was fine, the guest was not. Still, I persevered.

Anything else you would like to share?

Check out my fiendishly funny foodie novel, The Murdery Delicious Hamwich Gumm Mystery and my twisty suspense novel set in mid-90's Manhattan, the pale of memory. Both available on amazon.com and bn.com. Go to peterhalseysherwood.net for more info!
