Ingredients

  • Crust:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2/3 cups butter or shortening
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1/3 cup water (or enough until dough is play-dough feeling)
  • Apple Pie Filling:
  • 7 large apples, peeled and cut into chunks (preferably Jonalicious or a mix of Granny Smith and Fuji)
  • 2/3 cup sugar, plus extra to sprinkle on top
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 Tbsp. butter, cut into thin slices

Preparation

Step 1

1. Preheat oven to 365 degrees.
2. To make crust, combine flour and salt in a medium-sized bowl and mix in butter or shortening with your hands until well combined.
3. Mix in approximately 1/3 cup of water or enough so that the mixture feels like play-dough in your hands.
4. Break dough in half and roll out each half on a floured surface. Each crust should be about 9-10” in diameter.
5. Place one circle of crust into a deep 9” pie pan.
6. In a separate bowl, combine apples with sugar and cinnamon.
7. Pour apple mixture into pie shell and dot top of apples with slices of butter.
8. Put the second circle of crust on top and pinch the sides together to seal them. Cut 4 large slits in the top of crust, and 4 smaller slits in between them. Sprinkle the crust with a small amount of sugar.
9. Bake pie at 365 degrees for 1 hour or until apples are no longer firm and crust is light brown (place a piece of foil underneath the pie tin to catch the drippings if the apples are runny).
