Ingredients

  • 3 cups brown sugar, packed Frosting:
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 4 eggs 3 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 tsp vanilla 3 oz semi-sweet chocolate
  • 2 2/3 cups flour 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tbsp baking soda 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/3 cup boiling water

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat on high speed until light and fluffy. Add vanilla. Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl. Add alternately with sour cream into creamed mixture. Mix on low speed just until combined. Stir in water until blended. Pour into three greased 9 inch cake pans. Bake for 35 minutes or until done. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack to cool completely.

Step 2

For the frosting, melt butter and chocolate over low heat in a small saucepan. Cool several minutes. In a mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, sour cream and vanilla. Add chocolate mixture and beat until smooth. Frost cooled cake.

Use the best quality cocoa powder and chocolate you can find. It makes all the difference.
