Preparation
Step 1
In a small bowl dissolve yeast and 1 tsp sugar in warm water. Let stand until frothy, about 10 minutes.
Step 2
In a large bowl mix together flour, sugar and salt. Make a well in the center, add in the oil and yeast.
Step 3
Mix until dough forms. If dough is too dry add 1-2 tbsp water. Knead dough until smooth, about 8-10 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl, place dough ball into bowl, turn to coat with oil, cover and let rise until doubled in size, about an hour.
Step 4
Preheat oven to 450 F.
Step 5
In a large bowl dissolve baking soda in the hot water.
Step 6
Turn dough onto lightly floured surface and divide into 12 equal parts. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a knot/pretzel shape.
Step 7
Dip each pretzel into baking soda water. Place on lined or greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt.
Step 8
Bake for 8-10 minutes until browned. Brush tops with melted butter.
