Ingredients
- Plain Roll Dough:
- 1 - package active dry or 1 cake compressed yeast
- 1/4 - cup water
- 1 - cup milk, (scalded)
- 2 - Tablespoons shortening (Crisco or other brand) NOT OIL
- 2 - Tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 - teaspoon salt
- 1 - well-beaten egg
- 3 & 1/2 - cups sifted enriched flour

Preparation
Step 1
Soften compressed yeast in (lukewarm) water -- or -- active dry yeast in (warm) water
Step 2
Combine milk, shortening, sugar, salt; cool to lukewarm, Add softened yeast, egg gradually stir in flour to form soft dough.
Step 3
Turn out on lightly floured surface and proceed as desired under variations. Either the shortening or sugar or both may be increased to 1/4 cup to make richer rolls
Step 4
CINNAMON BUNS:
Roll 1/2 recipe PLAIN ROLL DOUGH on lightly floured surface to rectangle - 1/4 inch thick.
Step 5
Brush with 2 Tablespoons melted butter or margarine: sprinkle with mixture of 1/4 cup sugar, 2 Tablespoons cinnamon and 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
Step 6
ROLL as for jelly roll, seal edge: CUT in 1 inch slices. Place cute side down, in greased baking pan, (rectangle cake pan or cookie sheet) cover with dishtowel or paper towel and let them rise till double in size.
Step 7
Bake in moderate oven: (375 degrees - -- 25 minutes) Remove from pans: cool: you can frost if desired with Confectioner's Icing
