Grog

By

Admiral Sir Edward Vernon, nicknamed 'Old Grog' because his cloak was made of grogram, a coarse material, was returning from the Caribbean in 1740. He decided to water down the crew's rum rations in order to improve efficiency. The result was named Grog. By 1795, lemon juice was added to Grog to fight against scurvy. By 1850, lime was more commonly used. Other elements were added, but the original recipe was always one part strong rum to three parts water.
