Great Grandma Reese's Berliner Kranz Cookies

My mother made these every Christmas that I can remember. They are a German cookie appropriate for our heritage.

Ingredients
- 3/4 c. butter
- Granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. grated orange rind
- 1 egg
- 2 c. sifted flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 egg white
- Green decorating sugar and red cinnamon candies

Preparation
Step 1
Cream butter and add 1/2 c. sugar, orange rind and egg. Beat till light. Preheat oven to 400. Add flour and salt. Chill for several hours til firm enough to foll. Roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with floured 2 inch doughnut cutter. Put on cookie sheets.
Step 2
Beat egg white until foamy and add 2 TBS sugar gradually. Beat till stiff and peaks form. Brush cookies with the mixture. Decorate like a wreath with green sugar and cinnamon candies. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove to wire racks while hot.
If needed whip another egg white w/2 TBS sugar if you don't have enough.
