Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups of white flour
  • 1 heaping tablespoon of wheat germ
  • 1 stingy teaspoon of dry yeast (fleischmanns)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 cup of very warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of oil

Preparation

Step 1

Add dry ingredients and mix together and set aside in a bowl.

Step 2

Oma likes to microwave the water in a glass measuring cup for a minute and a half. When the water is warm, dissolve the sugar into the water and add oil. When the sugar is dissolved, add cold water to measuring cup until it reaches 400ml.

Step 3

Next, add the dry ingredients to the mixer bowl forming a ring around the outside. Using the bread hook attachment, mix while slowly pouring in wet ingredients.

Step 4

When it forms a dough like consistency, put flour on counter and knead bread for 10 minutes.

Step 5

Place dough in a bowl, cover with a tea towel, and let rise in a warm place like a slightly heated oven (100F then turned off) or warm windowsill until dough has doubled in size, roughly 3-4 hours depending on temperature.

Step 6

After dough has doubled in size, knead again, adding flour as needed to prevent dough from sticking to the counter or your hands. Then, mold into buns or place into an oiled pan for baking.

Step 7

After preheating the oven to 325F, add an eggwash to outside of bread and bake for 30 - 35 minutes.
