All About Pineapples

Gourmandize

The pineapple originated in South America. First referenced in 1398, this tropical plant is an excellent source of nutrients. Rich in manganese and vitamin C, the fruit also contains the enzyme bromelein, which has been contributed to fighting colds and coughs, and breaking down proteins, aiding in digestion and making its juice a delicious meat tenderizer.

Season

Pineapples are best between March and July

How to pick it

Pineapple do not ripen very much after they have been picked, so when looking for a pineapple first smell the fruit to see if the frangrance is sweet. Avoid pineapples that lack smell completely because they are not ripe. Also avoid pineapples that smell fermented as they are most likely overripe. Some kinds of pineapples are ripe when green so look for a fruit with a healthy appearance, green leaves, firm but soft when squeezed, and feel heavier than they appear. These pineapples are often juicier than others.

How to store it

Pineapples should be stored at room temperature on a countertop until ready to eat. Once you cut and core your fruit place in the refrigerator for up to one week. Pineapple can last up to six months frozen.

How to prepare it

Cut off the bottom and top of your pineapple, then begin slicing the skin from the sides. Cut the pineapple into about ¾” rounds and then slice into chunks discarding the core.

Tip

Twist and pull the top of your pineapple off before cutting up the fruit. Peel off half an inch of leaves from the bottom of the stock and stick it in the dirt to grow your own pineapple. Growing your own pineapple takes a bit of patience though. It takes between two and three years for a plant to produce a mature fruit.
