But Why Do the Locals Call The Festival “Wiesn”?

Well, at the end of the original Oktoberfest - the wedding celebrations between the loved-up royals in 1810 - a horse race took place on a meadow between Munich and Sendling. The meadow had no name, but in honor of the bride, was named "Theresenwiese".

In Bavaria, people like to save on their syllables, therefore ended up colloquially shortening the name to "the Wiesn".

So now you know a little Oktoberfest history!
