How to treat or prevent vitamin D deficiency

The good news: Vitamin D deficiency is easily preventable, and minor deficiencies can easily be counteracted. To start, you'll need to follow a diet rich in vitamin D and make an effort to be outdoors during the winter months for at least 20-30 minutes per day. A brisk, daily walk around your neighborhood can help you achieve this, not to mention it's a good low-impact exercise.

When it comes to consuming foods rich in vitamin D, opt for:

  • Oily fish (eg tuna, salmon, mackerel)
  • Cheese
  • Milk and juices with added vitamin D
  • Fortified foods
  • Yogurt

For more serious deficiencies, determined with the help of a blood test, consult your GP, who can recommend or prescribe suitable nutritional supplements or other treatments.
