A Southern classic with roots deep in family tradition, this custardy pie is rich, tangy, and surprisingly simple. With a flaky crust and golden, crackled top, it tastes like sunshine and sweet comfort in every bite. Grandma always served it with a dusting of nutmeg or a dollop of whipped cream.

Ingredients (for 8 servings):

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a bowl, whisk sugar and flour.
  2. Add eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  3. Pour into pie crust and sprinkle with nutmeg, if using.
  4. Bake for 50–60 minutes or until set and golden. Cool before serving.
