How To Identify The Real Stuff

Fortunately, there are some tricks for recognizing the real deal.

The best way to buy real extra virgin olive oil is to buy local! As opposed to large-scale, industrially produced stuff, local oils are usually produced by real people who are passionate about what they do.

If you can't buy local, the next best thing is to buy from co-ops or single-producers. If you're buying internationally, watch out for the name of specific region where the oil comes from, and even the specific type of olive (any cultivar will do, as long as it's marked).

Don't restrict yourself to Italian olive oil — there are excellent quality oils being produced all over Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia.
