Mexico: Pan de Muerto (Bread of the Dead)

In Mexico, Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is usually celebrated on November 1st and 2nd (although later dates may be included in the festivities, depending on the locality). 

Traditionally, it's a time to remember and celebrate the lives of those who have passed on. It is believed that the soles of deceased ancestors return to Earth during this period, so families cook traditional recipes in order to share a meal with their missed loved one.

One of the most traditional dishes made during the festivities is the Pan de Muerto (Bread of the Dead), a soft, sweet bread roll often decorated with bone-shaped dough on top. It's often flavored with orange zest and anise seeds.

Although the bread is usually eaten at home, some families enjoy the sweet treat next to the grave of their loved one.
