Cream of Tartar

Cream of tartar isn't the most well-known ingredient for younger generations, but Grandma probably used it all the time for her baking and cooking needs, and you should, too! It's found in the spice aisle and is not creamy but actually comes in the form of a dry powder with acidic properties (it's the residue found on barrels in wine production). It's especially useful for stabilizing egg whites or used as a leavener. If you're out of it or can't find any, you can sub 1 tsp lemon juice or white vinegar for 1/2 tsp cream of tartar.
