Tomato Paste

When a recipe calls for tomato paste, and you're all out, you have a few fallback options. For simple tomato-y flavor, sub 2-3 tbsp tomato sauce or puree for 1 tbsp tomato paste. If you don't need the thick texture of tomato paste, you can also sub 2 tbsp strained canned tomatoes for 1 tbsp tomato paste. And as a last resort, you can sub 1 tbsp ketchup for 1 tbsp tomato paste—but remember that store-bought ketchup usually has added spices and sugar, so you should adjust your recipe accordingly.
