Scalloped potatoes bring comforting layers of thinly sliced potatoes smothered in a rich, creamy sauce and baked to bubbly, golden perfection. It’s the kind of side dish that always earns a second helping. Creamy, cheesy, and nostalgic—this side dish is pure comfort and a perfect match for your holiday ham.

Ingredients (for 8 servings):

  • 2½ lb russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh thyme (optional), for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13” baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Sauté garlic for 1 min., then stir in flour to form a paste.
  3. Slowly whisk in milk and cream, cooking until slightly thickened, about 5 min. Stir in 1 cup of the cheese and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Layer half the potatoes in the dish, pour over half the sauce. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  5. Top with remaining ½ cup cheese and cover with foil.
  6. Bake for 40 min. then uncover and bake for another 20 min. until golden and bubbly.
  7. Let rest for 10 min. before serving. Garnish with thyme if using.
