These soft, spiced buns are studded with raisins or currants and finished with a sweet icing cross on top. Ingredients (for 12 buns):
For the Buns:
3½ cups all-purpose flour
¼ cup granulated sugar
2¼ tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt
¾ cup warm milk
¼ cup butter, melted
2 eggs
¾ cup raisins or currants
For the Crosses:
½ cup flour
5–6 tbsp water
For the Glaze:
¼ cup powdered sugar
1–2 tsp milk
Instructions:
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, spices, and salt. Add warm milk, butter, and eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead in raisins. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
Divide into 12 rolls. Place on a greased baking dish and let rise for another 30 min.
Mix flour and water to make a paste. Pipe a cross onto each bun.
Bake at 375°F for 20–25 min. until golden.
Mix powdered sugar and milk for the glaze and drizzle over cooled buns.
