Salt

Turn on the iron. While you wait for it to heat up, pour a generous amount of salt on a dry cloth. Rub the cloth up and down lengthwise across the base of the iron, taking care not to burn yourself. When you see that the burnt stains have disappeared, turn the iron off and allow it to cool, then wipe it off with a damp cloth.
