Good As New

There's no place more prone to grease and grime than your kitchen's extractor fan. The filter retains cooking fumes and random food splashes, which is why it's so difficult to achieve a real deep clean - even with the help of chemical products.

But, with just 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and 3 tablespoons of sodium borate (not essential, but worth adding if you're wanting top results) you'll soon trick guests into thinking it's brand new, without the stink of any chemical odurs! Read on to find out more.

Step 1

Step 1

Fill the sink (or any other sufficiently large container), with hot water and sprinkle in the baking soda. Allow sprinkle in the sodium borate if using that too.

Place the filter into the container, making sure the water completely covers it.

Step 2

Step 2

Gradually, the water will change color due to the dirt that is coming off. Don't worry, the dirtier the better!

Allow the filter to soak for 15 mins. before lifting it from the water using with rubber gloves (so you don't damage your hands!). You'll then be ready to give it a real scrub.

Step 3

Holding the extractor fan using rubber gloves, give it a scrub using a sponge, dish scrubber or steel wool. Make sure to reach all corners and intricate nooks and crannies!

Once scrubbed, wash of the suds and wipe down with a cotton kitchen towel.

You can also make a paste using 1 teaspoon of baking soada, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and 1 splash of white vinegar. Mix until a paste is formed, then lightly scrub with a soft sponge so as not to scratch the surface.

Rise and wipe clean with a cotton kitchen towel. If you want extra shine, you can use a special product to clean stainless steel.

Once the filters are clean and dry, place them and watch them sparkle!
