A study on the 5-second rule

The study was led by Professor Donald Schaffner, of Rutgers University, who worked with researchers to study the rate of bacterial cross-contamination for specific surfaces and foods. The surfaces included stainless steel, ceramic tile, wood and carpet, and the foods were watermelon, bread, bread with butter and gummy candy. The contact times used were less than 1 second, 5 seconds, 30 seconds and 300 seconds.
