Shaobing - China

Shaobing is a popular bread or pastry of Northern Chinese origin, and it's one of the country's oldest traditional foods. Typically made with flour, yeast, sesame paste and salt, it comes in various shapes and sizes, but it's usually round or slightly long and oval, with or without a sesame seed topping. Crispy on the outside with a layered, chewy interior, it's delicious plain or stuffed with sweet or savory fillings. Savory versions might include braised or smoked meats, stir-fried veggies with tofu or served with sandwich-style toppings while sweet ones can be stuffed with red bean paste or black sesame paste, among other ingredients.

Shaobing is especially popular for breakfast, but it can also be served as a side to soups, porridge or even hot pot in the wintertime. You can find this local bread specialty at street stalls and restaurants throughout the country, although it's mostly famous in Northern China and also sometimes goes by the name huoshao.
