Antioxidants: What Are They?
In order to combat free radicals, which usuall come from external sources such as air pollutants and industrial chemicals, it's useful to follow a diet rich in antioxidants. But what exactly are they?
Antioxidants neutralize the impact of exposure to these free radicals, which lack a full complement of electrons. They do this by giving up some of their own electrons and in making this sacrifice, they act as a sort of "off" switch for the free radicals.
Some of the best antioxidants include vitamins C and E, micronutrients such as iron, zinc, and natural food colorings such as carotenoids and flavonoids.
