Arby's New Shake Tries To Rival Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccino And It's...

...just as random. While Starbucks preferred to take a more mythical approach to novelty beverages with its puzzling invention that is the Unicorn Frappuccino, Arby's is hoping to capitalize on the public's affinity for wild animals with its limited edition Liger Shake.

For anyone who doesn't know, a "liger" is simply a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger. In Arby's terms, it is "part orange cream, part premium Ghirardelli chocolate".

In other words, it's a thankless mashup of the brand's Ultimate Chocolate Shake and Orange Cream Shake. The stripes are made with Ghirardelli's chocolate sauce. A brand spokesperson told Thrillist that the company preferred "real, powerful creatures" to "the imaginary, docile kind" (nudge, nudge, wink, wink, Starbucks).

What about nutrition? We compared the serving size of 1 small Arby's Liger Shake to 1 grande Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccino below:

Overall, the two drinks yield equally atrocious nutritional results (enough calories for a large meal, more than a days' worth of recommended sugar intake, high in carbs and saturated fat).

With fast food chains vying to stay relevant in the face of rising competition, we can only expect more outrageous concoctions in the future. The Liger Shake is available in 16-oz and 24-oz sizes at Arby's locations nationwide throughout June.
