The first symptoms are fatigue, lethargy, and easy bruising...

We all know it: vitamins play an important role in keeping the body healthy and functioning well. One of the most crucial is vitamin C, which is responsible for a litany of health benefits including: strengthening our immune system, promoting cell growth, and helping the body absorb calcium and iron.

But when we don't get enough vitamin C through our diet, what happens?

You've probably actually heard of it before: it's called scurvy. While scurvy isn't a particularly common issue in modern society, it is being increasingly reported in hospitals in the U.S.A., United Kingdom, and Australia.

People with scurvy can experience some pretty concerning symptoms, and if left untreated it can result in death. So how can you tell if you've got it? Here are some of the symptoms...

  1. Low Energy — If you have a Vitamin C deficiency, you'll find yourself weak, tiring quickly, and feeling lethargic.
  2. Easy Bruising — If you suddenly start to bruise like a peach, then maybe you need to eat more peaches.
  3. Weakened Immune System — Getting hit by colds and infections more frequently? Wounds taking longer to heal? It's probably because your immune system is compromised.
  4. Dry Skin and Hair — If your hair is getting brittle and your skin rough, this could be a sign that your body isn't getting the flush of nutrients it needs to keep your outside soft and supple.
  5. Aching Joints — This could also be a symptom that you're not getting the vitamins you need.
  6. Gingivitis — Inflamed gums are one of the first signs of vitamin C deficiency.
  7. Mood Changes — If you're feeling more irritated and short tempered than usual, you could be low on vitamin C. Who knew oranges were such a harbinger of happiness?

The good news is that vitamin C is plentifully available in our modern diets. Good sources of the vitamin include oranges, lemons, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and spinach.
