No Love Allowed In Granola: FDA Ruling Baffles Independent Bakery

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defends public health on all fronts, making sure that our medicine is safe to use and our food is safe to eat. This time, however, they may have crossed the line.

FDA: No Love Was Involved In The Making Of Your Granola

FDA: No Love Was Involved In The Making Of Your Granola

It has recently come to the FDA's attention that Nashoba Brook Bakery has been an unauthorized ingredient in their artisanal granola. Is it an untested food additive? Or perhaps a potential allergen? On the contrary, the ingredient is far more heinous than any of us could have anticipated. It's most commonly referred to as "love."

The FDA's warning letter to the Massachusetts-based bakery went as follows: "Your Nashoba Granola label lists ingredient "Love". Ingredients required to be declared on the label or labeling of food must be listed by their common or usual name [21 CFR 101.4(a)(1). 'Love' is not a common or usual name of an ingredient, and is considered to be intervening material because it is not part of the common or usual name of the ingredient."

What's Love Got To Do With It?

It seems silly that the FDA banned Nashoba Brook Bakery from listing love as an ingredient, but the letter also addressed more pressing violations (particularly with regard to misbranding and sanitary issues). Still, there's no denying the fact that there can never be too much love in the world — even if it can't be listed as an official ingredient.
