If you drink a lot of coffee, you know the annoyance of those regular vinegar cleanses you have to submit your machine to. They're an extra hassle that you have to go through before you can make yourself another cuppa, but even more: they fill your entire kitchen with the horrible, strong smell of vinegar.

For most of us, this is the only way we know that works. After all, you have to use a strong substance to be able to clear your machine of all the build-up and mineral residue that collects within its system.

But vinegar isn't the only thing that works. Its greatest rival alternative? Lemon.

We've always known this citrus fruit was a useful cleaning tool (here's how you can use it to clean your oven!), but few of us have thought to try it in our coffee makers.

The process is pretty much the same as how you use vinegar in your machine. Here's how to do it:

  • Run a cycle with water only to clear out any leftover particles.
  • Mix half a cup of lemon juice and half a cup of water.
  • Pour the mixture into the water reservoir of the coffee machine. Let it work there for 15 minutes.
  • Then put in a clean, clear filter and run a full cycle.
  • Run one or two cycles with just water afterward to rinse out all of the lemon solution.

Now your coffee machine will be sparkling like new – and ready to brew a fresh cup of joe!
