Health Over Time

The results of the study were clear: obesity is definitely unhealthy in the long-run. Researchers saw that after 5 years, 32.5% of healthy obese subjects had become unhealthy obese, with this number jumping to 37.9%  after 15 years, and 48.1% after 20 years.
According to Dr. Joshua Bell, the director of the study, time is the key factor. When an overweight person is declared "healthy," it does not take into consideration what will happen over time if they keep the same lifestyle habits. The problem is that being healthy in the present is no guarantee of health in the future. "Following the healthy obese for two decades, we now see that the idea of 'obese but fit' is misleading, since healthy obese adults tend to become unhealthy obese in the long run."
Over the years, obesity can wear down the body and cause poor health. Overweight and obese individuals can suffer from numerous health issues, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and poor insulin regulation. Over time, these can cause cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, osteoarthritis, and poor mobility.
So ultimately, 'fat but healthy' is not true. It seems the key to a long and healthy life is simple: good diet and plenty of exercise.
