Is your lipstick POISONING you?

This might give you pause next time you go to touch-up your lipstick.

Almost all lipsticks on the market have been found to contain a range of unwanted ingredients such as lead, cadium, chromium, aluminium and  retinyl palmitate, a synthetic ingredient that breaks down when exposed to light and may contribute to free radical formation.

Not exactly what you were going for when puckering up is it?

The FDA has found that popular brands such as Cover Girl, L’Oreal, Maybelline, and Revlon were some of the worst offenders, containing the highest levels of lead, but even companies that trade on a "natural" image like Burt's Bees are found to contain the element.

Lead exposure can cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and other organs, so why isn't this a national scandal? Because the FDA says that as lipstick is designed to be used on the body and not to be eaten, the amount of lead it contains shouldn't cause concern.

If you aren't totally convinced, you aren't alone— this is a controversy point and many commentators say that any exposure to lead at all, is unsafe.

So how can you protect yourself?

Unfortunately, the only way to be 100% sure that you aren't exposing yourself to dangerous substances is to forgo commercially produced lipstick altogether.
