First, air it out:

Letting your mattress "breathe" is an important, yet often forgotten step. Germs and dust mites like warm and humid environments, so it's important to air your mattress out from time to time. Just strip the sheets, open the windows, and let your mattress get some air and sunlight. This will reduce the allergens and the amount of bacteria.

Use this homemade disinfectant:

You can make this simple disinfectant at home in a matter of minutes. It uses baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, which will purge any disease-causing organisms from your mattress in no time at all.

- 3 tablespoons baking soda

- 1 cup hydrogen peroxide

- 3 drops of liquid soap

- Spray bottle

- Clean rag

Mix the baking soda and the hydrogen peroxide until the lumps disappear. Combine with a little liquid soap and mix well. Pour into the spray bottle and apply to the mattress, especially in areas where you see stains or dark spots. Leave to dry for about 20 minutes, then wipe the surface of the mattress with a clean rag to remove any residue.

Repeat this process to disinfect your mattress once or twice a month.
