I Went to Costco in France and This is What It Was Like

ALL THE LITTLE DETAILS

Perusing the center of the warehouse, things were largely the same as in the US. As a strawberry-frosted-poptart fiend, I quickly found a box I could barely wrap my arms around, and kept walking. Like its American counterpart, the French Costco has everything from a decorative ficus to jeans to ceramic flooring and everything in between. Many things seem to have been imported directly, especially food products, as the manufacturer's original nutrition label had the plain, white French one stickered next to it.

And, this is where I started to feel a little dazed and confused—as much as it seems like you've just been transported back to your favorite American suburb, you're very much still in France. There's nothing wrong with that, per se, but don't be like me and suddenly get displaced when you're pushed out of the way by a cart filled with kids cackling in French. Or when you're offered samples of their famous pizza in perfect French.

As for the food, it was a strange mix of classic American brands and products—you can get a Cheesecake Factory frozen cheesecake there!—and French staples. There was a flicker of hope as I approached the freezer section, hoping I'd catch a glimpse of Totino's Pizza Rolls or some Morning Fresh Mozzarella Sticks, but alas, I was merely met with frozen quiche. I admittedly spent the majority of the time wandering down the aisles marveling at the choices available, my eyes never really able to focus on just one thing. The cheese selection alone is a sight to behold.
