This FRIENDS Conspiracy Theory Has the Internet Perplexed

,

Umm... What?

One Alex Baker has come up with an interesting theory linking the popular sitcom Friends with the even more popular coffee shop chain, Starbucks. His claim:

Friends was created for the sole purpose of priming American consumers for the coffeehouse culture we now enjoy.

According to Baker, the entire TV series could have been part of an extremely elaborate business plan "to manipulate human behaviour, getting them away from pubs (Cheers) and into coffee shops (Friends).”

It Gets Weirder...

According to his theory, the character Rachel Green was a precursor to the Starbucks logo. Because it's green. Like her last name. Get it?

It goes on: Ross and Monica's last name Geller comes from the German word for yeller... Because that's what baristas do when your coffee is ready.

Read the rest of it for yourself:

You must be thinking... Huh?

Before you start jumping to conclusions, let's consider the facts.

The first Starbucks opened in Seattle in 1971. That's over two decades before the first episode of Friends even aired.

Rather than manipulating the American conscience into choosing coffee shops over bars, maybe Friends merely reflected a change in society's preferences over time. Who knows?

Could it be that this ridiculous conspiracy theory was just a joke?

In that case... Well played, Alex Baker. Well played.
