Cooking Protip: This Is The First Skill Every Chef Learns

,
Gourmandize

This will make your life so much easier.

Have you ever had to stop what you're doing in the middle of cooking and rummage around your kitchen (or worse, run to the store!) for a critical ingredient?

Every good chef gets their mis en place done before they begin cooking. Mis en place is French for getting your stuff together. This means:

  • Read the recipe... Twice. Consider if you might want to make little adjustments, or swap out ingredients.
  • Assemble your tools: chopping board, knife, pans, spatulas, etc.
  • Prep all the ingredients: chop your vegetables, trim/marinate your meats, and measure out your spices.

Make sure everything's all laid out in front of you, then start cooking. This will not only save you time, it will conserve movement (and energy).

With all of your ingredients and tools organized, you'll have more attention available to focus on the process of cooking, meaning you'll be freer to taste frequently as you go along and make little adjustments here and there. So instead of a scatterbrained, jumbled dish, you'll end up with delicious, lovingly-crafted food.
