The McLobster, And Other Massive McDonald's Failures

Arch DEluxe

One of McDonald's most expensive errors was the Arch Deluxe. Composed of a quarter pounder stacked on a split potato bun with special add-ons, including Spanish onions, circular peppered bacon, leaf lettuce and a new special sauce (which was in fact a simple mixture of mustard and mayo), this mid-90's creation wasn't necessarily expensive to produce. But it cost a fortune to promote (more than $150 million), as it was meant to appeal to sophisticated, urban adults. One commercial featured kids looking at the burger with disgust (when did showing an aversion to the brand's food EVER work in advertising?!). When that flopped, they made new TV ads showing Ronald McDonald partying at clubs, playing pool and golfing. As you might expect, that didn't go down well either. It was just a bad idea, all the way across the board.
