Yes, you read that correctly. No, it's not a typo.

Vegan Ice Cream

Vegan ice cream is nothing new. As the lifestyle becomes more widespread, many have developed recipes for vegan ice "cream," but normally they use either bananas or coconut cream to create some approximation of the frozen treat.

Recently, companies have made strides in creating cruelty-free meat options that range from products that mimic the look and taste of meat to cuts of meat grown in laboratories. For a long time, though, it seemed that when it came to animal-based dairy alternatives, nut milks were the only option.

One company has just changed that.

Last month, Perfect Day Foods launched the first vegan dairy protein product: ice cream. Their ice cream uses what they call "flora-based dairy protein" for a creamy texture and flavor. Using biotechnology, they've programmed natural micro-flora to do exactly what a cow's genes do—convert sugar into milk.

After fermentation, this milk is separated into the dairy proteins, whey and casein. Though this dairy protein is completely animal-free, it's "nutritionally identical" to the traditional cow's milk kind.

Oh, and it's lactose-free.

The ice cream has gotten rave reviews, and sold out within a day of their official launch—they're already working on their next batch.

Perfect Day is also looking to create dairy products like cream cheese, yogurt, and drinking milk using their flora-based dairy protein. This could mean great things in the fight for sustainability, and the effort to stop global warming; animal farming produces a hefty amount of greenhouse gases.

In the meantime, we can't wait to see what else Perfect Day cooks up!
