Replace white sugar with unrefined sugar; it's better for the body and full of good nutrients.
Dark brown sugar can be replaced with regular sugar or light brown sugar. You might not get the distinct taste that comes from dark brown sugar, but it's totally doable!
You can also replace sugar with Agave syrup, although it is a powerful sweetener. That said, it has a very low glycemic index. 100 grams of sugar is equivalent to about 75 grams of Agave syrup.
You can also use honey, but remember to slightly lower the baking temperature (by about 60°). Honey contains fructose and glucose, which can impart a slightly amber-colored flavor to your recipes. You also need to reduce the liquid quantities called for (milk, water, etc.) because honey is made up of 18% water.
