Fugu

How would you like your fish served with a side of sudden death? Parts of the Japanese fugu puffer fish contain tetrodotoxin, which is 100 times more lethal than cyanide. Only a handful of expert chefs know how to properly remove the offending parts (the livers, ovaries and skin), and approximately a third of all chefs who seek certification fail the exam. The white, almost translucent flesh is typically served raw in ultra thin slices, sashimi-style. Part of the appeal of this delicacy is the numbing sensation associated with early-stage poisoning, so if your lips start to tingle, get to the hospital immediately!
