Casu Marzu

Look carefully before you reach for the cheese plate because the Sardinian cheese Casu Marzu has been known to cause severe illness including vomiting, diarrhea, and cramps. Banned by the European Union, this unusual delicacy is made with the help of flies and maggots—munching their way through the fat, and depositing their feces as they aid in the fermentation process. Casu Marzu is typically served on bread with strong red wine, but don’t reach to pick off the wiggling maggots: eating them alive is an essential part of the experience. Just hope they don't survive their passage through your stomach and settle into your intestines. They can burrow into the lining causing unpleasant and painful side effects before they eventually find their way out.
