Blood Clams

Fans of the Blood Clam praise the succulent and unusual flavour, but they have been banned in their native China since 1988 when a huge Hepatitis A  outbreak linked to Blood Clams infected more than 300,000 people and caused 31 deaths. Named because of their muddy red colouring, the real danger of the clam lies in their ability to carry diseases. Clams get their food by filtering water, which can contain bacteria. Much bacteria cannot survive around high oxygen levels, but the Blood Clams live in low-oxygen environments and are thus particularly prone to disease.  Despite this frightening risk, Blood Clams continue to be sold widely on the black market.
