A Dangerous Diet?

If this diet sounds extreme and potentially dangerous to you, you aren't alone. We talked to dietitian Brigitte Zeitlin about what she thinks of this restrictive diet. Dr Zeitlin agrees that it is certainly an effective way of losing weight, and fast, but added that the weight loss would not last. "It's unhealthy and dangerous to consume less than 1,200 calories a day. No nutritionist could advise it, no matter how much weight you want to lose," Zeitlin said. "In addition to not providing sufficient energy input and nutrients needed every day, it is harmful to the body, and once the diet is over and previous eating habits are resumed, all the lost weight will be regained."

Yo-yo diets can also be dangerous because losing and resuming weight repeatedly can cause serious damage to the heart and metabolism, stress the body and increase the risk of inflammation, according to Zeitlin. Instead of yo-yo diets, it is recommended that you have a balanced and healthy diet with a variety of whole fruits, vegetables and lean protein.
