Massala chai, also known as chai tea or a chai tea latte, is the beverage of choice in India. It's made using a blend of spices, called a massala, which is then infused in hot tea with lots of milk and sugar. The mixture of flavors and aromas makes it the ultimate comfort-drink.

Ingredients

Makes 4 mugs

For the massala (spice blend)

  • 10 white peppercorns
  • 8 green cardamom pods
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon powdered (or fresh) ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

For the tea

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups whole-fat milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 black tea-bags or 2 tablespoons loose black tea
