Respect the cooking time

If you want your pasta to be al dente, then make sure to continuously check and taste it as it cooks. Avoid overcooking pasta because then it turns into a big pile of tasteless mush. Not to mention that overcooked pasta has a higher glycemic index, which is not great if you're watching your weight! Also make sure to never add a lid to the pasta as it boils, otherwise it will change its shape and consistency.
